SFU Engineering Science students develop invaluable systems design skills alongside a deep foundation of technical knowledge. Our fast-paced, immersive program challenges undergraduates to become innovators with effective communication skills, entrepreneurial drives and great real-world experience.

Programs and Options

Students in the Bachelor of Applied Science program [BASc and BASc (Honors)] follow common core courses in their first two years. From the third year on, they specialize in a program option or field of concentrated study. Options may be followed as a major or honours program (where applicable). The honours degree requires a thesis that demonstrates the student’s skill in their chosen field.

BASc in Electronics Engineering (Major/Honors)

From a foundation of fundamental electric and electronic concepts, you’ll move on to system analysis, communications and digital signal processing, combining course-work with practical training. This program option equips and inspires students to design next-level advancements in a potentially limitless range of high-tech fields. Graduates will possess a sound knowledge of electronic design combined with excellent – and highly sought-after – practical skills.

BASc in Computer Engineering (Major/Honors)

SFU’s Computer Engineering option trains students to think logically about complex and abstract problems – and to develop innovative solutions for those problems. Our program provides an extremely flexible elective list that allows students to combine software and hardware expertise with applications that interest and excite them. As a technology expert, you will work within a team to ensure the application experts receive the solution best suited to their needs – which might mean higher performance, lower power or smaller size.

BASc in System Engineering (Major/Honors)

The Systems option prepares highly versatile engineers capable of integrating electronics, mechanical design and computer hardware and software. Systems graduates will be able to recognize problems requiring knowledge from diverse disciplines, and focus the efforts of multi-talented teams on their solution. A wide array of electives allows students to tailor their expertise to their interests. Robotics – the design and analysis of machines that see, feel, grasp and manipulate their environment – is a key theme in this option.

BASc in Engineering Physics (Honors only)

SFU’s Engineering Physics option introduces students to a unique blend of science, mathematics, engineering design and practice as well as computer skills – all combined with a strong focus on theoretical and applied physics. A challenging program, it was designed to build on the strengths of the School of Engineering Science and the Physics Department and it focuses on optics, opto-electronics, advanced semiconductor devices and microelectronics.

BASc in Biomedical Engineering (Major/Honors)

Biomedical engineers analyse health problems, look at the technology available to address that problem and ask themselves: “how can we do this better?”. Our biomedical engineers have the same foundation in programming, electronics and systems engineering but use those tools for improving health outcomes. The Biomedical Engineering option – jointly offered with the School of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology – is highly interdisciplinary and is taught by faculty from both the schools.

The major program will start in Spring 2024.

Accelerated Master's In Engineering Science

This dynamic program is open to top students currently enrolled in the B.A.Sc. program at SFU. This joint program is designed for top engineering undergraduates who want to fast-track their graduate education in the School of Engineering Science at SFU. Students in this program may apply graduate course units/credits, taken while completing the bachelor’s degree, towards the upper division undergraduate Engineering Science and Design (ESD) electives of the bachelor’s program and the requirements of the master’s degree.

Minor in Computer and Electronics Design

Technical skills enhance your resume and open doors. The possibilities are endless and you’ll stand head and shoulders above those without the specialized skills obtained through successful completion of the Minor in Computer and Electronics Design. From here, you’ll branch out into areas tailored to your individual interests, such as microelectronics, communications, design, manufacturing and fabrication.
